The M Word You Need to Know

Mindfulness…the word on the tip of everyone’s tongues (eh, or minds?) at the moment…or at least it should be!

Did you know that science says the M word is a KEY ELEMENT FOR HAPPINESS? We don’t mean to textyell, but we got excited about this wonderful tid bit of fact.

Though it may sound like it’s for spiritual souls only, it is NOT. In all truth, the concept has loads of actual science studies that show the numerous benefits of being mindful, and the studies and findings are still coming. The mindful revolution is happening NOW.

So what is this M word exactly?

In simple words, it's being aware of THIS moment. Like the one you're in while reading these very words. (Psst, we're writing to you, gorgeous)

In 'official' terms, mindfulness is the practice of being deliberate in focusing your attention on the present moment, and accepting it without judgment.

Why is it important?

  • Makes it easier to appreciate life as its happening and helps you become fully engaged in what you’re doing now

  • Improves both your mental and physical health

  • Allows you to focus on growing and developing yourself into a happier person

  • Provides an inner outlet to handle difficult situations

  • Empowers you to live life with a conscious mind, and form deeper connections with others

How is it good for my health?

Oh, let us count the ways! It’s known to help treat:

1. depression

2. substance abuse

3. eating disorders

4. couples’ conflicts

5. anxiety disorders

6. obsessive-compulsive disorder

AND it also:

7. helps relieve stress

8. treats heart disease

9. lowers blood pressure

10. reduces chronic pain

11. improves sleep

12. alleviates gastrointestinal difficulties

WE KNOW PEOPLE. Why isn’t everyone and their mom getting more mindful? Well now is the perfect time to start, and we’re proud of you for taking the first step in learning about mindfulness.

So are you ready to learn how to start minding your mind?? Now that we covered the bare basics, see below for the next baby step!

Focus your attention on your breathing and the sensations within your body.

  1. Breathe in through your nose, allowing the air downward into your lower belly. Let your abdomen expand fully. (Or try to make your belly look pregnant)

  2. Now breathe out through your mouth. Funny breathing noises that happen to come out are totally allowed and recommended.

  3. Notice the sensations of each inhale and exhale.

  4. Continue breathing slowly and with full focus on your breathe.

  5. Engage your senses fully. Notice each sight, touch, and sound so that you savor every sensation.

Note: Your mind will most likely (um, definitely) wander from the task at hand. When it does, gently bring your attention back to your breathe, and the sensations of the moment. It’s a practice, which means it takes practice!
